Recently I have posted about how to protect a single instance database with Oracle Clusterware and have received a number of comments and requests concerning licensing information for this feature.
So I have just asked Oracle PreSales about this and here we are with the details:
The good news is:
You do not need an additional license to use the Oracle Clusterware, even with single instance database!
But!: the emphasis is on additional!
You need to have at least one license for at least one standard edition database in the cluster if you want to use the clusterware to protect your single instance database!

Hi Iesa,
what do you mean, standby server?
If you have a data guard configured, logical or physical standby, then you neeed a license. But the conditions you must ask Oracle for I do not know for shure. As far as I know, you must pay for a license for a physical standby as soon as you have switched over for more than ten days a year. But I cannot give you a guarantee for this. THey change these these policies all the way.
=;-)

Thanks for your reply…Let me explain our situation:
We have two servers, and we have one Oracle Database instant. We want to install another instant in the other server and connect the two servers thru the clusterware. One of the servers will be up and running and the other will be waiting for any H/W or S/W failure in the first server to take over the load. in that case I am using a single Oracle instant all the time. (if the frst is up then the second must be down & vice versa)
Thanks in advance
